Michigan’s 7th District Could Flip on Energy Costs
Energy costs are reshaping the 2026 midterm race in Michigan. After the U.S.-Iran war began in late February, the average price of gas in Michigan jumped from $2.99 to $3.95 a gallon in three weeks, a 32 percent increase. One week alone saw a 90-cent spike, among the sharpest of any midterm battleground state.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a formal energy emergency, allowing southeast Michigan gas stations to sell cheaper summer-blend fuel. She cited both the war and federal tariffs. Prices kept climbing anyway, briefly topping $4 a gallon before easing in recent months.
The center of the fight is Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, currently held by Republican Representative Tom Barrett. It is rated one of the most competitive House seats in the country heading into November.
Voter Anger Is Moving Numbers in Michigan
The political math is shifting. A Democrat won a special state Senate election in May by nearly 20 points, in a district Kamala Harris carried by less than one point in 2024.

Trump’s economic approval also dropped among his own party, falling from 74 percent to 62 percent among Michigan Republicans between March and April, according to the same survey. That kind of intraparty erosion is rare in a midterm environment.
The survey found that 42 percent of likely Michigan voters, including 44 percent of independents, said they would be less likely to vote for a congressional candidate who supports Trump’s energy policies. Only 21 percent said they would be more likely.
Christine Waugh-Fleischmann, a Democratic voter and art teacher in the 7th District, told Reuters she spends up to $200 a week on gas driving to visit her grandchildren.

The convergence of tariff-driven inflation and war-driven fuel spikes has given Democrats a concrete economic frame heading into November. Republicans, who had targeted Michigan as a top 2026 pickup opportunity, are now playing defense.

Call Rep. Tom Barrett’s office at (202) 225-4872 and tell his staff you want him to oppose tariff policies that raise gas and energy prices. Barrett holds Michigan’s most competitive House seat and is directly accountable to these voters.

Contact your Michigan state legislators using the Michigan Legislature’s district finder and ask them to support state-level energy affordability measures, including fuel blend flexibility that Whitmer had to emergency-order in 2026.

Register to vote or update your registration at Michigan.gov/Vote before the October 21, 2026 deadline. The 7th District race may be decided by a small margin.
