ICE Killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on His Way to Work
On July 8, 2026, an ICE agent fatally shot 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in North Houston. Agents in unmarked vehicles stopped him and three other men who were driving to a home-building job. Salgado Araujo, a father of three, did not survive. None of the agents on the scene were wearing body cameras.
The absence of body camera footage means the public record depends almost entirely on fragments of video captured by nearby business surveillance cameras. Those clips are incomplete. The federal government has released no official account of what led to the shooting.
Three Eyewitnesses Remain in ICE Detention
The three men who were in the vehicle with Salgado Araujo at the time of the shooting are now held in immigration detention. Advocates and elected officials have called for their release, arguing that detaining witnesses to a government killing cuts off independent accounts of what happened.
On July 10, 2026, Houston Mayor John Whitmire announced a local investigation after immigrant advocates criticized him for previously stating the city lacked authority to act. The Houston Police Department has not confirmed whether it has formally opened a use-of-force review.
Hundreds Protest as Federal Answers Remain Missing
On July 11, 2026, hundreds gathered at Houston City Hall demanding answers.
“I would like to see a clear understanding of what happened, of why they believed they had the right to do that to an individual, and for them to be held accountable.”
Charles Torres, Houston resident, July 11, 2026 protest
The event was organized by the Houston chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Additional demonstrations are planned across Texas in the coming week. Organizer Vivek Venkatraman told the crowd to prepare for a long campaign, not just a few days of action.
ICE has not publicly addressed whether the agents involved have been placed on administrative leave or whether the Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation. The DOJ Civil Rights Division has jurisdiction over federal law enforcement killings.
