The Letter
Red flag laws allow families and law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily remove firearms from someone who poses a danger to themselves or others. 21 states and DC have these laws. They are credited with preventing suicides, which account for the majority of gun deaths in the United States.
Six states now make it a crime to enforce these orders. Texas made enforcement a felony punishable by two years in prison. Wyoming prescribes up to one year. Montana fines local governments $10,000 per violation. Iowa and Missouri are considering $50,000 fines. South Carolina's proposal would make enforcement a felony.
Tell your state legislature to protect red flag law enforcement and oppose criminalization of these orders.
