On January 24, 2025, the Trump administration fired at least 17 inspectors general across federal agencies by email late on a Friday night. No 30-day notice to Congress. No stated reasons. Federal law requires both.

District Judge Ana C. Reyes ruled the firings were "obvious" violations of federal law but refused to reinstate the watchdogs. Since then, IG offices report 20 to 30 percent staffing decreases. Agencies are blocking IG access to information. Budget requests for IG offices have been cut or zeroed out at multiple agencies. Nearly 20 watchdogs have been fired since the start of the second term.

The fired inspectors general had collectively returned over $100 billion to taxpayers through fraud detection and waste reduction before their removal. Without them, no one independently audits how FEMA spends disaster money, how the VA treats veterans, or whether defense contractors deliver what they promise. The IG Independence and Empowerment Act would require Senate confirmation for IG removal. Tell your senators to co-sponsor it.
