The Letter
Ohio and Texas are purging voter rolls using data matching systems with documented error rates. Citizens are being removed without adequate notice or opportunity to correct errors. In previous purges, states wrongly removed thousands of eligible voters — disproportionately affecting Black, Latino, and young voters.
Voter roll maintenance is necessary. Purges based on broken data before a major election are not maintenance. They are suppression.
Require 90-day advance notice before any voter is removed from the rolls. Mandate same-day registration as a failsafe. Prohibit purges within 90 days of a federal election using data matching systems with error rates above 1%.
