A company called RealPage sold rent-pricing software to 31,700 landlords managing 16 million apartments. The software pooled nonpublic data from competing properties and told each landlord what to charge. The White House estimated it cost renters an average of $70 per month in affected buildings. That is $840 a year extracted not by market forces but by coordinated price-setting.
The DOJ settled with RealPage in November 2025. No liability admitted. The software was not banned. RealPage can still sell rent recommendations using older data and broader geographic inputs. California and New York passed state-level bans, but most renters have no protection.
Tell your representatives to co-sponsor federal legislation banning algorithmic rent coordination. Two states acted. Congress has not. The DOJ settlement proved the federal government will name the problem but not fix it.
